    Some holiday gift ideas…

    By Russ | November 29, 2009

The holidays are here and Laura and I have been busy working on some bike touring gift ideas. I’ve wanted to sell prints from our trip for awhile but haven’t found a system that I’ve been happy with. We rode with some readers from Santa Monica the other day (both photographers) and they suggested Zenfolio so I’m giving it a try.

Now you can buy selected images from our trip in various print sizes (and as magnets and calendars!). If you want to order a print or two (or other doodads), you can go here. One of my favorite images is the one below, you can order that here.

It was taken in an area just North of Trinidad. We were riding in the afternoon and this perfect shaft of light just broke through the canopy of trees. I waved Laura ahead of me and I waited until just the right moment.

Laura has also been hard at work on some new goodies, now available in her etsy shop. A new batch of simple sterling silver earrings feature bits of the Krebs California North Coast Bicycle Touring Map. This map was gifted to us along the coast by fellow cycle tourists, Jim and Jane. They had purchased it for their own trip (from Bandon, OR to California wine country), but would no longer need it once they passed the Hwy 101 and Hwy 1 split (they stayed on Hwy 101, while the map follows Hwy 1). After spending an evening with them at the hiker/biker camp area in Humboldt Redwoods, they decided to gift the map to us, as we were planning to follow Hwy 1 and could get some good use out of it.

The Krebs map is easily one of the greatest maps we’ve seen for cycle touring. It shows a “main” route, while also giving you information about the surrounding areas, marks where there are stores (small markets and supermarkets alike) and camping (even distinguishing between private or government and showing where there’s hiker/biker or a shower), and shares regional history and other facts about the area. It has a fun, hand-drawn-looking aesthetic and great colors. Now that we’ve exhausted the map, it makes great earrings!

I’d love to order a calendar but their website doesn’t seem to be the easiest to navigate through.

Ditto on the calendar issue. Your West Coast catalog has only 8 photos anyway… any chance you’ll build that up before the new year?
