I for one, really love the new technology and have always dreamed of doing a real time internet adventure. There are a few bike tourists that I follow online and I get such a kick of watching their progress. We hope to do the same. I want this whole project to be as if you took Jack Kerouac, Ira Glass, bicycles and Ian Hibell and mashed them all together and put it online! A sort of “On the Road” on bicycles but with a bit more direction (less drugs) and all happening in real time.

On a related note, we’re investigating smart phones and some sort of portable computing system. I keep waffling between the iPhone and Google phone. Personally, I have real issues with AT&T so am leaning towards the G1. The laptop is in the air as well. I have a MacBook right now, but it is a bit heavy and bulky. A Macbook Air might do, or something like a high powered Asus, or perhaps this mysterious new Apple product that has yet to be released.

If anyone has any leads with any telecom/smartphone/portable laptop companies that might be interested in a creative sponsorship. Let us know!

I have the Asus EEE PC - the one that runs Linux. Very little issues with it, and were I to bring a laptop on a bike trip that would be the one. There are a couple of nice features:

      1. Solid state so it weighs less
      2. WiFi built in
      3. Has a built-in card reader (for managing photos from the camera, for example)

Inexpensive. If you back your data up to the SD card and drop the laptop in a puddle it’s not *that* much of a stretch to get a new one, and your data is on the card.

I have the Asus eee pc 1000ha http://www.amazon.com/10-Inch-Netbook-Processor-E-Storage-Battery/dp/B001GIPSAC

I love it! I also have an iPhone. Love that too!

I think the Asus recommendations that people have made are probably spot on. Dell also makes some sub laptops that I have seen go for around $200 on sale. I probably wouldn’t take a Macbook Air solely due to cost.

As for the G1/iPhone, I guess it depends what you want to do. I have the G1 and I really like it. The camera is nice and I find it better than the iPhone’s. I haven’t used the iPhone extensively but since I wanted to moblog, I find the G1 to be adequate. It works well for traveling, as would the iPhone, since they both support WiFi.

      Good luck with the choices.

This is so awesome; I wish you the best of luck!

I hope that you can use twitter to have people jump on your “train,” for a single stage or even a series. . . that is if it’s your thing.

I am glad that I could catch you at the beginning of your adventure. If you need some storage space in SoCal or anything for the start, I am just down the road in HB.

bc…thanks for the tips….I would probably totally go for a sub like the Asus, but I need a bit more computing power on the road to edit the photos and sound. Maybe a 12 inch mac? Ugh…

how is the G1 with updating wordpress blogs?

I think you need to first list off your computing/technology/communication needs. You don’t need OSX if all you’re doing is updating wordpress, emailing and doing some google searches for a hotel in northern montana. But you do definitely need more than a smartphone, as you will NOT want to be typing out your blogs on the little phone keyboard.

I say go for something like the ASUS recommendations above. I’ve seen them, and they are small — potentially too small for my hands, but weighing that against carrying a full computer for thousands of miles, I’d say that’s a fair tradeoff!

sorry, no insight regarding the iphone/g1 — i would compare the coverage of the two carriers, as AT&T isn’t so good in the middle of nowhere… and that’s where you’re gonna be.

wait, i didn’t read that last message. if you are editing photos and sound, which DUH, of course you are — then you might need more computing power. I think you’ll find yourself frustrated going from whatever powerful editing computer you have now down to an ASUS to use photoshop.

i’d say the small mac you suggested, or the sony vaio’s are really slim.
